How to Wash Your Surgical Uniform

Keeping your surgical uniform clean and in good condition is not just about professional appearance—it’s also a matter of health and hygiene.

Here are the best tips for washing your medical scrubs properly.

How Often Should You Wash Medical Uniforms?

After every use—especially if you’ve been in clinical or surgical areas.
Medical clothing should always be washed separately from your everyday clothes, with specific care, to prevent bacteria buildup, bad odors, and premature wear.

Step-by-Step: How to Wash Your Surgical Scrubs

1. Wash them separately
Avoid mixing your scrubs with everyday laundry. This prevents the transfer of germs and reduces fabric wear from friction.

2. Turn the garment inside out
Just like your favorite pair of jeans, turning scrubs inside out helps prevent pilling, color fading, and keeps the fabric looking good longer.

3. Use cold or warm water (max. 40 °C / 104 °F)
When washing your scrubs for the first time at home, it's best to use warm water. A typical warm water cycle in a household machine is around 90°F (32°C), which is gentle enough to preserve color and avoid shrinkage.

4. Avoid using too much fabric softener
Softeners can break down elastic fibers. To help set the color and keep your uniform soft, try adding a bit of white vinegar to the wash instead.

Bonus Tip: Time for a Scrub Refresh?

If your current scrubs are starting to lose their color, stretch, or shape—it might be time for an upgrade.
